Teide National Park surrounds Mount Teide, a stratovolcano that rises to 3,715 metres — the highest point in Spain and in the Atlantic Ocean's islands. The park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 for its exceptional volcanic geology.
The landscape is a vast caldera (Las Cañadas) filled with lava fields, mineral-coloured rock and formations such as the Roques de García. Its clear, high-altitude skies make it one of the world's premier stargazing locations.
A cable car (teleférico) climbs close to the summit; access to the very top requires a free permit issued by the national park authority.
Good to know
Year-round; go early for clear skies and shorter cable-car queues
Half to full day
A free permit is required to climb the final summit cone above the cable car. Bring warm layers — it is far colder than the coast. The cable car is operated by Volcano Teide.
