Santa Cruz & La Laguna
Franco de Castilla House
An 18th-century La Laguna mansion with ornate Baroque stonework, rebuilt after a major 20th-century fire and restored in the 2000s.
History & background
Franco de Castilla House was built in the mid-18th century by the military officer Matías Franco de Castilla. Its carved stone decoration gives the street façade a strong Baroque character that stands out among La Laguna’s plainer traditional houses.
A serious fire in 1970 damaged the building, but later restoration returned it to the historic urban landscape. The restoration completed in 2009 is part of the wider conservation effort that preserves La Laguna’s UNESCO-listed centre.
