Best Beaches in Tenerife
A practical guide to Tenerife’s most distinctive beaches — from sheltered golden sand near Santa Cruz to volcanic black-sand coves, surf beaches and the wild Atlantic coast of Anaga.
Tenerife's coastline runs from sheltered golden-sand resorts in the sunny south to wild black-sand coves in the green north. This guide rounds up the island's best-known beaches by area and by what you want from a beach day — easy swimming, family time, water sports or simply dramatic scenery.
Why Tenerife's beaches are different
Tenerife is a volcanic island, and its geology shows on the shore. Many natural beaches here have dark grey or black sand formed from eroded volcanic rock — a striking contrast to the pale sand most visitors picture.
Several of the most popular resort beaches, by contrast, were created or topped up with lighter imported sand and sheltered by breakwaters to form calm bathing areas. Knowing which is which helps you choose: gentle, family-friendly bays in the south, and more dramatic, often wilder beaches in the north.
Best beaches in South Tenerife
The sunny south — around Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas — has Tenerife's biggest concentration of easy-access swimming beaches. Many are sheltered, have golden sand and sit within walking distance of resorts, which makes them popular with families.

Best beaches in North Tenerife
Northern Tenerife is greener, cooler and more dramatic. Its beaches tend to have dark volcanic sand and face the open Atlantic, so they're better known for scenery and surf than for calm swimming — though there are sheltered exceptions such as the landscaped Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz.

Best beaches for families
If you're travelling with children, look to the sheltered, golden-sand bays of the south-west. Beaches such as Playa del Duque and Playa de las Vistas are popular family choices thanks to their gentler, more protected waters. Always check the beach's flag and any lifeguard guidance before swimming.
Surfing, windsurfing & wind sports
El Médano, on the south-east coast, is one of Europe's best-known spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing, thanks to its reliable winds. On the north coast, Playa del Socorro near Los Realejos is a long-standing favourite with surfers. Atlantic conditions change quickly, so check local forecasts and respect any warning flags.
Scenery & photography
For raw scenery, head to the Anaga coast in the north-east. Playa de Benijo and the nearby Roque de las Bodegas are dramatic black-sand beaches framed by rock stacks, popular for sunset photography. In the west, the small dark-sand beach at Los Gigantes sits beneath towering cliffs. These wilder beaches can have powerful surf — often better for photos than for swimming.

Good to know
Swimming conditions
Sheltered southern bays are generally calmest; north-coast and open-Atlantic beaches can be rougher. Always check the day's flag.
Sun & shade
Sun is strong year-round. Bring shade, water and high-factor sunscreen, especially in summer.
Getting there & parking
Most resort beaches are easy to reach on foot from nearby towns; quieter natural beaches can have limited parking that fills early.
Facilities
Busy resort beaches usually have sunbeds, showers and cafés nearby; remote beaches often have few or no facilities, so come prepared.
Wind
The south-east around El Médano is reliably breezy — great for wind sports, less so for a still beach day.
Best season
Tenerife is a year-round beach destination thanks to its mild climate; the sea is warmest in late summer and autumn.
Frequently asked questions
- Yes. Because Tenerife is volcanic, many of its natural beaches — especially in the north and west — have dark grey or black sand. Playa Jardín, Playa de Benijo and the beach at Los Gigantes are well-known examples.
