Santa Bárbara Coastal Battery
An 18th-century coastal battery beside Puerto de la Cruz’s old harbour, built to defend the port against pirate and privateer attacks.
History & background
The Santa Bárbara Battery formed part of the defensive system protecting the old port of Puerto de la Cruz. Built from earlier artillery platforms in the 18th century, it guarded the commercial harbour from possible attack.
The surviving site is closely tied to the nearby Royal Customs House and fishing harbour. Cannons displayed in the area recall the fortification’s original role and the wider military network that protected Tenerife’s north coast.
Visitor information
The battery is an open-air waterfront heritage site and is easy to combine with the Royal Customs House and old fishing harbour.
