Southern Tenerife
Montaña Pelada Natural Monument
A coastal volcanic cone near El Médano formed by an ancient submarine eruption, with fossil dunes and plants adapted to sand and salt.
About this volcanic site
Montaña Pelada is one of the clearest places in Tenerife to see the result of explosive interaction between magma and seawater. The protected cone was formed by an ancient submarine eruption beside the coast of Granadilla de Abona.
Around the volcano, fossil dunes and sandy soils support specialised coastal vegetation. The combination of geology, dunes and open Atlantic views makes the site unusually varied for a relatively compact protected area.
