Santa Cruz & La Laguna
Former Jesuit House, La Laguna
An 18th-century Jesuit residence later occupied by La Laguna’s Royal Economic Society, with important archival and educational associations.
History & background
The former Jesuit House was built between 1733 and 1737, during the period when the Society of Jesus played an important role in education and religious life in La Laguna. Its scale reflects the institutional presence of the order in the city.
After the Jesuits were expelled from Spanish territories in 1767, the building took on a new civic and intellectual role. The Real Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País moved there in 1777, and the site became associated with archives, books and the promotion of education and economic improvement.
Visitor information
