Northern Tenerife
Los Frailes Volcanic Cone (Montaña de Los Frailes)
A small historic volcanic cone in the Orotava Valley, topped by a chapel and surrounded by cultivated slopes.
History & background
Montaña de Los Frailes is a compact volcanic cone in Los Realejos and one of the distinctive landscape features of the Orotava Valley. Its origin is thought to date to the medieval period, placing it among Tenerife’s relatively young volcanic forms.
The slopes have long been used for cultivation, while a small chapel on the summit connects the volcanic landscape with local religious tradition.
