Chinguaro Cave Archaeological Site

An important Guanche heritage site in Güímar associated with the indigenous menceyato and the early history of the Virgin of Candelaria tradition.

HistoricCulture & Heritage

Chinguaro is one of Tenerife’s most significant places for understanding the transition between Guanche history and later Christian tradition. The cave complex is associated with the rulers of the Güímar menceyato before the Castilian conquest.

Later religious tradition linked Chinguaro to the first keeping of the image that became known as the Virgin of Candelaria, making the site important in both indigenous and post-conquest narratives.
