Southern Tenerife
Caldera del Rey Natural Monument
A broad phreatomagmatic volcanic crater in Adeje whose sheltered floor has long been used for agriculture.
History & background
Caldera del Rey is one of Tenerife’s clearest examples of a volcanic crater formed when rising magma interacted explosively with water. The result is a wide, shallow depression rather than a steep summit cone.
The crater floor has been used intensively for cultivation, creating a striking contrast between protected geology and agricultural activity. The site also preserves caves and traces connected with the people who worked the land.
Visitor information
Much of the crater floor is actively cultivated or privately managed. View from public roads and authorised paths rather than crossing farm property.
